An integral component of engineering education is out-of-classroom and extracurricular activities that give students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and work in teams to gain hands-on experience tackling real-world engineering design challenges. In addition to gaining valuable technical skills, the students also gain a more well-rounded understanding of the engineering profession and develop professional skills including leadership, interpersonal communication and problem-solving.
In addition to supporting field trips, guest speakers and professional development resources, the Student Development Fund also assists student teams. The student teams work on various projects, ranging from designing cars, toboggans and bridges, to developing business plans to engaging in community service. Some examples of student teams include:
- Electric Car Club
- Formula UBC
- Thunderbots
- UBC Solar
- UBC Thunderbird Robotics
- Engineers Without Borders
Student teams require financial and in-kind resources to carry out their activities, which commonly include testing and travel. For many teams, the challenge of developing a design or business plan is even more rewarding when students have the opportunity to travel to participate in national and international competitions.
Student teams greatly enrich learning by enabling students to gain hands-on experience, test and expand their knowledge, and make connections with industry and the community. Please consider supporting our outstanding student teams. For more information, please contact the Faculty of Applied Science Development and Alumni Relations Team.
